Alessandro Profumo meets UWC Adriatic students

A journey through personal history and economic considerations; this is how Alessandro Profumo’s meeting with over 180 students at UWC Adriatic can be summed up. In front of a young and multicultural audience of students aged 16 to 18, from over 80 countries, Dr. Profumo made a clear analysis of the current economic situation in Europe with elements of autobiographical memories. Speaking of the "Dangers and Opportunities in the Current Financial Situation" he brought students and teachers to reflect on the current world economic situation and lead to a lively debate on today’s and tomorrow’s socio-economic situation.

Answering the many questions posed by students, Dr. Profumo focused on the concept of "responsibility" as an indispensable quality at all decision-making levels. To succeed in the labor market of the future, Dr. Profumo advised the students to develop their skills and focus their efforts on content, values ??that in recent years have unfortunately been decentralized in favour of communication skills and "know how to present". Dr. Profumo closed his talk by explaining the significance of diversity and inclusion in the economy, which must learn to be "multicultural" and "open".
In presenting his best wishes to the whole UWC Adriatic community and for the future of all the students, he recalled how: "A crisis could occur again but education will always be the most effective way to meet the challenges of the present and future."

Alessandro Profumo was born in Genoa on 17 February 1957, the fifth child in his family. His father was an engineer, leading a small electronics industry, which he founded. Alessandro spent his childhood in Palermo, but in 1970 he moved with his family to Milan, where he attended the Liceo Manzoni. After that, he decided to move his studies to the economic field and attended the prestigious Bocconi University. In 1977, he married Sabina Ratti, whom he had met at high school and, in the same period, he began his banking experience at Banco Lariano. In 1987, after earning a degree in Business Administration, he left the banking sector to take up consultancy. Until 1989, he was in charge of strategic projects for McKinsey & Company. Later on he served as the head of institutional relations at "Bain, Cuneo and Associates" (now Bain & Company). In April 1991, he returned to the banking sector to take up the position of CEO for the RAS group. Three years later, he moved to Credito Italiano, a year after it was privatised, as  Central Co-director. Here, he  began his climb to the top of the bank:  General Manager in 1995 and  CEO in 1997. In 1998,  the Unicredit group was set up and Alessandro Profumo took the leadership. In 2003, together with John More, he wrote "Surplus Value", an essay on corporate social responsibility. In 2004, he was nominated “Cavaliere del Lavoro” by Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
