Truth and Hope in Giulio’s Memory

A scholarship initiative in Giulio Regeni’s memory was launched on February 3rd in the Italian Parliament

One year after the brutal torture and murder of Giulio Regeni we are still demanding the truth about the circumstances of his death. Giulio’s story is about the search for truth but also about a young man and UWC alumnus who was curious and intelligent, who believed in dialogue among cultures and who had a passion for the Arab world and in particular for Egypt.

We want to keep his memory alive and think that scholarships in his memory are a good way to do so. This initiative has been launched by Giulio’s UWC USA friends Lorenzo Bartolucci and Federico Torracchi and has the support of Giulio’s parents. Upon his family’s request the scholarships raised will be awarded to Egyptian students to study at our College. Scholarship recipients will be deserving young people, selected on merit alone by UWC Egypt (the UWC National Committee in Egypt) and who otherwise would not have the opprotunity to continue their studies. This initiative has been launched on February 3rd in an event at the Italian Chamber of Deputies in Rome (watch the video) and was hosted on the popular Rai 1 show “1 Mattina” on 16 February (watch video).

Giulio was born and raised not far from UWC Adriatic, where he was selected to attend UWC USA in 2005. Giulio’s scholars will be welcomed in a place where his memory will concretely endure over time. The project has already gained the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, which is granting the 2017 scholarship. We are therefore in the process of raising the second scholarship, to be awarded in 2018.
