Peace One Day

On September 21st all 17 UWC schools and colleges celebrated UWC Day in praise of The Power of Diversity. Check out our photo gallery!

On September 21st UWC Adriatic students were involved in a full day programme – both on and off campus – centered around this year’s theme of “The Power of Diversity”.

Lessons were suspended in the morning so that students could join in the Auditorium for a lively and fruitful Open Space discussion. After lunch our 188 students (half of whom arrived in Duino for the first time just at the end of August), explored the  diversity of the surrounding area by visiting the Greek-Orthodox, the Serbian-Orthodox, the Slovenian, the Istrian, and the Islamic communities in Trieste.

The four groups then met once again  in Piazza Unità to stage the multicultural show Peace One Day, that returned to Trieste after two years of being in Udine. This year the show was hosted by the 3-day science dissemination festival Trieste Next which, for the 6th consecutive year, drew thousands of visitors from the region and bordering countries.

The show was the highlight of the afternoon, with Piazza Unità enlivened by the flags and national costumes of so many UWC Adriatic students. The one and a half hour show drew many enthusiastic rounds of applause from the audience, whose attention was drawn to the many countries torn by warfare and the plight of the Rohingya (see photo gallery below).

Throughout the three days of the festival the College had an information desk hosted in the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) marquee. The desk was frequently visited by potential candidates for the selection and members of the public interested in getting to know the College better and in collaborating with the College’s social service association Mondo 2000.
