Biennale 2017

Lorella Veglia’s visual art students were treated to a special trip to Venice last Wednesday in order to visit the Biennale

The College’s 3 Visual Arts classes spent a day the 57th Biennale international art exhibition in Venice this week, visiting both the venues in Giardini and the Arsenale and their pavilions by 86 participating countries.

This edition of the Biennale is centred around the theme of humanism, with 120 artists from all over the world celebrating mankind’s ability to break free from the negative forces that rule our human dimension.

Students were impressed by the sheer vastness of the exhibition and the manner in which contemporary art is able to creatively address challenging issues of our times and found plenty of inspiration for their final IB exhibition.

In the words of the Biennale’s curator, Christine Macel, “Today, in a world full of conflicts and shocks, art bears witness to the most precious part of what makes us human. Art is the ultimate ground for reflection, individual expression, freedom, and for fundamental questions. Art is the last bastion, a garden to cultivate above and beyond trends and personal interests. It stands as an unequivocal alternative to individualism and indifference.”
