January the 25th and February 3rd 2016 are dates we will never forget. Giulio Regeni’s forced disappearance and the finding of his tortured body 10 days later outside Cairo marked a tragic event that affected his family and close friends, the UWC community and his University friends, all who knew him and many who did not know him personally but shared his values. The very same values of international and intercultural understanding, personal responsibility and integrity, idealism and service that are at the heart of the United World Colleges (UWC), where Giulio studied for two years before going to university. Three years later, on January 25th 2019, Amnesty International Trieste, UWC Adriatic and Liceo Petrarca co-hosted and event in the streets of Trieste to demand once again truth for Giulio Regeni.
The UWC mission is to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. The UWC Adriatic scholarships dedicated to Giulio Regeni are awarded to Egyptian students, selected exclusively on merit by the UWC National Committee in Egypt, singling out applicants with very limited economic means. In the 2018-19 academic year UWC Adriatic assigned 3 Giulio Regeni Scholarships. Two are provided by the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, which has supported this initiative from the outset, and one has been raised thanks to the UWC Adriatic online fundraising campaign launched in 2017 by two of Giulio’s Italian UWC friends, Lorenzo Bartolucci and Federico Torracchi.
The College aims to ensure this initiative’s continuity and you can help us raise more scholarships for a new Giulio Regeni scholar in 2019/21! Our tribute to Giulio and his passion for knowledge will consist over time in changing the life of many new Egyptian students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, enabling them to attend UWC Adriatic and become forces for peace in their country. At UWC Adriatic, through the presence of many Egyptian students, the memory of Giulio will live on.
