Five GoMAD grants to UWC Adriatic student initiatives will help students make a difference this summer

UWC Adriatic is particularly proud of its students’ achievements in this year’s edition of the GoMakeADifference project selection process: 5 projects by students in Duino have been selected and will involve College students making a difference in Germany, Morocco, South Africa, South Sudan and Uganda!

GoMAD grants are a UWCx initiative that, starting in 2001, supports UWC students wanting to have an impact on an issue they feel strongly about. Every year students submit projects and selected initiative get up to 1000 $ to put their mission into action over the summer. This year 75 projects were submitted across all UWCs with 31 receiving grants from GoMAD. UWC Adriatic, with 5 selected projects, is the College with the greatest number of successful applications.

Peter and Boboya from South Sudan and their team will establish a small public library in Juba and involve children in simple but enjoyable hands-on science work. Fatima and Wiktoria and their team of volunteers will work with drug addicted orphans in Casablanca, supporting their education and integration in the local community. Hala and her group will interview Syrian women refugees in Germany about their war experience and write a blog about it. Mercy will return to her native Uganda and with the help of her team will contribute to an environment more conducive to learning by refurnishing the classroom block in Kadongo. Julie and Etumu and their group, including Emma, Lucia and Maria will empower 1000 teenage girls in rural areas of South Africa by providing them with reusable menstrual cups. In addition to these 5 projects “made in Duino”, our second year Vilmine from Norway is co-organising a project with a second year student at UWC RCN. Well done to all!
