Best students of Italian as a foreign language

The College Closing Ceremony this year resumed the awarding of a prize to the three best students of Italian as a foreign language

This year’s Closing ceremony on Saturday May 25 resumed the awarding of a prize to the best students of Italian as a second language: students whose efforts and achievements throughout the year warranted an official acknowledgement. The prizes were handed out by the representatives of two institutions that have longstanding ties with the College: the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation – represented by Minister Plenipotentiary Stefano Queirolo Palmas – and the foundation Fondazione CRTrieste – represented by President Tiziana Benussi – who have generously sponsored this initiative alongside the considerable support they offer the College in terms of scholarships.

All students at UWC Adriatic study Italian throughout their two-year stay at the college. Alongside the courses for Italian native speakers, UWC Adriatic offers three courses of Italian as a foreign language according to the levels set out by the International Baccalaureate: Italian B Higher Level, Italian B Standard Level and Italian B ab initio.

In 2019 the prizes were assigned to the following second-year students: Amanda Barreto Salgueiro (Brazil), Ines Lo Sardo Roman (Spain) and Hala Murad (Syria) for the follwing reasons:

ITALIAN B HIGHER LEVEL

AMANDA BARRETO SALGUEIRO – For the lively and intelligent curiosity that Amanda has always shown not only for the language, but also for Italian culture and society; for her acute sensitivity regarding to the different language registers and above all for the authenticity and spontaneity of her writing and speaking, which have brought Amanda to a level of fuency typical of a native speaker.

ITALIAN B STANDARD LEVEL

INES LO SARDO ROMAN – For the high level and continuity of the results achieved in two years, for her enthralling and contagious enthusiasm and her lively participation in academic activities, always marked by  a proactive and joyful attitude, as well as for the pleasant naturalness of her written and spoken language.

ITALIAN B AB INITIO

HALA MURAD – For the proactive approach demonstrated not only in class, but also in all activities and trips around Italy; for her profound curiosity towards Italian language and culture; for the excellent language level achieved, especially in terms of oral language perfomance.
