Just as preparations were underway for the UWC Day celebrations at our College, on Friday 20th September the College Sustainability Council launched Green Week at UWC Adriatic.
Green week provided UWC Adriatic students with the opportunity to join the global movement for climate action but also to focus on matters connected with sustainambility and to reflect on possible tangible steps our community can take to contribute to saving the planet and making people aware of the consequences of disregarding environmental issues. One of the first activities in the week involved taking a bus to visit a sustainable items store in Santa Croce, where students can find bulk detergents and other products in order to make their daily habits as plastic free as possible.
Green Week actually started with the Youth Inspiring Change conference, in which college students made presentations on a variety of global issues, including climate change. The following day the Peace One day show by college students was held in Monfalcone, with the theme “Climate of Change”. Amid the traditional and modern dance acts performed by students from around the world, several college students shared personal reflections on pressing international issues, with second-year Maria Lua from Brasil speaking about the Amazon forest fires crisis.
Several films showings complemented throughout the week a number of student-driven activities, such as a discussion on food waste and what students can do about it, a focus on the IPCC and GEO-6 climate reports and an introduction to permaculture by teacher Laura Summers. The week ended with the students exercising their right to strike in Trieste, where they took part in the local FFF protest march and with student litter pick in Cernizza on the weekend.
