Konstantinos comes from Trikala, a small city in central Greece. He first learned about UWC from a former teacher, whose son attended UWC Singapore and encouraged Konstantinos to apply. Kostantinos has fond memories of the selection process in Athens which he recalls as being both intense and challenging but also interesting: for instance when candidates had to choose a country in the world to travel to in order to learn something with a view to changing the world. He was particularly appreciative of the fact that this process did not feel competitive and that the Greek UWC National Committee simply wanted to understand what students were like as people. Konstantinos was fortunate enough to be successful and joined UWC Adriatic as of August 2019.
Since arriving in Duino, Konstantinos’confidence is growing every day. Surrounded by his new friends, he is enjoying the diversity of the college: his roommates are two second-year students from Hong Kong and Jordan and one first-year like himself from Barbados. They get along really well and Kostantinos even gave up the opportunity of going to Rome or Florence over the long weekend so as not to leave one of his roommates alone, since he couldn’t leave Duino because of problems with his travelling papers.
Kostantinos’ written and spoken English is improving every day and he is working hard at his Italian as well. His subject choice is quite challenging (HL: maths, chemistry, economics and English B; SL: Italian B and World Literature/Greek. The activities he is particularly passionate about are his hip-hop class and his social service – Science with Kids. “Seeing how children react enthusiastically to our science hands-on activities is amazing“, he says, “I can’t understand the details of their comments yet, but their expressions say it all and it’s so rewarding!”
