The UWC Adriatic community has been deeply touched by the news of the passing away on November 11th of David B. Sutcliffe at the age of 85. “DBS” was one of the leading figures of the UWC movement, which would not be what it is today without his commitment, vision, passion and leadership. After being the Head of UWC Atlantic College from 1969 to 1982 he accepted the challenge of becoming the founding Rettore at UWC Adriatic – the first UWC in a non-Anglo Saxon country. Upon retiring, in 2001, David Sutcliffe then dedicated his boundless energy and drive to creating a UWC in Mostar, making his dream come true in 2006.
Seventeen generations of Duino students from around the world have had the privilege of experiencing a truly life-changing educational experience with David Sutcliffe as a role model. Referring to him as “the headmaster”, they will never forget his passion for human development and education, steeped in pragmatism and sense of humor, nor his life lessons such as “Be bold, and you will regret nothing!”
At UWC Adriatic we will be announcing shortly an event to commemorate Mr. Sutcliffe and celebrate his legacy. Meanwhile our thoughts are with his wife Elisabeth, his children, his beloved ones and his countless UWC friends.
Go here to read a piece about how David shaped the UWC movement in many fundamental ways by Andrew Maclhose, former colleague of David at UWC Atlantic and long-standing friend.
The College has received the message below from Michael Sutcliffe, David’s son.
We have been greatly moved and are immensely grateful for all the wonderful messages, memories and thanks to David, which have comforted and supported us at this sad time.
