Refugee Campaign 2019-20

The presence of refugee students at the College is a transformational experience for all our students

UWC entered into a cooperation agreement with UNHCR in 2017, pledging to provide 100 scholarships to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDP). Each UWC college and school contributes to this goal through the efforts of their donors.
In 2018-19, seventeen refugee and IDP students attended UWC Adriatic. These young men and women, coming from Iraq, Palestine, Syria, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Guinea, and Mali (the students from the latter three countries having arrived in Italy as unaccompanied minors), were all selected for their incredible potential. Despite their initial inevitable struggles with classes and school work, thanks to outstanding support from teachers and the UWC Adriatic staff these students have been able to take full advantage of this education opportunity. Indeed, most of the refugee students who graduated last May are now continuing their studies in the United States after winning scholarships to prestigious universities there.
In 2019-20, eight refugee and displaced students, from Nigeria, the Gambia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Iraq, commenced their studies here in Duino. Your help is invaluable in covering the costs of their second year at UWC Adriatic. Each and every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference.
