The first few months of Azeez’s UWC experience have been both exciting and challenging. In spite of the deficiencies in his previous education, he set out from the start to make the most of the opportunity he has been offered, exceeding many of his teacher’s expectations in terms of effort. In Duino Azeez has earned praise for being motivated, inquisitive, industrious and an active participant both in class and in his CAS activities. Be it in his social service teaching English to young people in Monfalcone, on the football pitch or in his Italian class – just to name a few – Azeez unfailingly proves to be an engaged, positive and thoughtful presence.
Given the plight of the Êzidi minority in Iraq, his thoughts are constantly with his people back home in SinJar – in northwest Iraq, close to the border with Syria. As soon as he returned there over winter break, he started working on a video to show SinJar reduced by ISIS to rubble and mass graves – a village where most of the places and many of the people in his childhood memories have turned to dust and ashes.
When he returned to Duino the college dedicated one of the weekly assemblies entirely to Azeez, so that he could show this video and share with our community his determination to help his people. “Not a single day goes by in this incredible new life I am experiencing without my being aware that I represent my people in UWC Adriatic. In everything that I do” says Azeez “I feel the urge to grow, learn and be useful to my people”.
Thanks to many alumni and friends of the College we have raised 23.000 euro for Azeez’s first year in Duino.
With your help we can provide him with a scholarship for his second and final year in Duino!
