January 25 2021 marked the 5th anniversary of the forced disappearance of UWC USA alumnus Giulio Regeni while he was doing research work in Egypt. Since 2016 UWC Adriatic has supported the initiative of two Italian UWC USA friends of Giulio’s to offer scholarships to deserving Egyptian students who pass the UWC selections in their country. This is to honor Giulio’s keen interest in Middle Eastern culture by enabling deserving Egyptian students to access a UWC education. Approved by the Regeni family, this initiative is also financially supported by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.
In May 2020 an Egyptian second-year who had benefited in 2018-20 from a scholarship donated by individual donors succeeded in getting the IB diploma. At present two Egyptian students supported by the FVG Region are attending our college.
Please contribute to the UWC Adriatic campaign for the Giulio Regeni Scholarships: no amount is too small and each gift will contribute to ensuring that we continue to give deserving Egyptian students with demonstrated needs the chance to benefit from a life-changing educational opportunity in Giulio’s name.
Thanks to the Annual Fund Matching Committee, individual donations of 1.000€ and above will be matched by a generous group of UWC Adriatic alumni.
