Students and donors meet again at UWC Adriatic

Last month we were finally able to welcome once again some of our long-term supporters

October has once again been a month of visits to the College. After the pandemic had greatly impacted on the opportunities for direct contact between donors and students, last month we were finally able to welcome once again – in full compliance with COVID-19 protocols – some of our long-term supporters.

A young man with curly hair and glasses stands outdoors next to an older woman holding glasses and a pink face mask. They both wear light jackets, and the background features trees with green and yellow leaves.

The first visit was that of the President of the CRTrieste Foundation, Ms Tiziana Benussi, accompanied by the Secretary General, Paolo Santangelo. Our two guests met the President, Ambassador Cristina Ravaglia, and the Secretary General, Valentina Bach, along with the student Julijan Marc who is attending the College thanks to the contribution that the Foundation allocates for a two-year scholarship in Duino for a student from the province of Trieste.

A man in a suit and a woman in a denim jacket and white dress stand smiling on a stone wall. The man has a dog on a leash. They're outside, with greenery and a building in the background.

Mr. Alessandro Calligaris, a loyal friend of the College, was able to meet for the first time Briana Cecil Akili, a first-year student from Tanzania and recipient of the scholarship he provides for students hailing from Sub-Saharan Africa. Mr. Calligaris and Briana, accompanied by the President and the Secretary General of the College, had a pleasant meeting in which they took a stroll around Duino.

Five people stand outside on a gravel path surrounded by autumn trees. They are wearing coats and smiling. The background features buildings and a fence. The scene suggests a cheerful gathering in a park-like setting.

Another visit was paid by the President of the Casali Foundation, Mr. Francesco Slocovich. For decades the Kathleen Foreman Casali Charitable Foundation has supported scholarships for English students attending our College in Duino, and it is thanks to the contribution of the Foundation that Mercedes Sancha Obeng will be able to attend the College as part of the 2021-23 cohort.

Three people stand around a large, round stone well in an outdoor courtyard. The well has a metal grate cover. Behind them are yellow buildings with red roofs, and trees with sparse leaves. The sky is cloudy.
Finally, Valentina Dereani and Giovanni Maria Nicolicchia – students from Friuli who are attending UWC Adriatic thanks to the joint support of the Pietro Pittini Foundation and the Friuli Foundation – met the President of the latter, Mr. Giuseppe Morandini. During a pleasant conversation they told him about their experience at the College, their interests and aspirations, with new ideas for future projects.
Moments of encounter and dialogue between students and our donors have always had a special relevance at the College and we trust that the COVID-19 situation may enable us to resume them to a greater extent in the not too distant future. Indeed, it is by knowing our students and hearing from their hands what this educational experience means that supporters of the College can fully understand the value of the United World Colleges project.
