MUN 2022

On 25-26 March all first-year students and a group of second-years took part in the UWC Adriatic MUN Conference

Model United Nations (MUN) is one of the most important CAS activities at the College. Each year, a number of second-years teaches a group of first-years the inner workings of the main UN bodies (General Assembly, Security Council, etc.). They, in turn, train all other first-years in the first part of the second term, so that they can then participate in the MUN Conference. This year the College MUN Conference took place on 25-26 March.

During these proceedings, students represent countries different than one’s own as they takes part in the debates and votes on resolutions. They therefore learn how to view topical issues and defend points of view that are not necessarily their own.

The Committiees and topics discussed this year were:

  • Human Rights: LGBTQ rights and Ideological extremism in Russia
  • ECOSOC: Legalisation of drugs and economic impact
  • Human Rights: Measures to assist informal workers in West-Africa
  • Environment: The Nord Stream 2 pipeline
  • Security Council: The Ukraine crisis
  • Historical Council: The Syrian Civil War
  • Environment 2: Shipbreaking in Bangladesh
  • General Assembly: Period poverty and stigma.

For the Opening Ceremony, students invited alumna Giulia Foghin (AD 1988-2000). After the College Giulia studied International Relations at the University of Sussex and then did a Master’s degree in Trieste on Peacebuilding and Peacekeeping before starting to work for UNHCR. Giulia arrived in Duino straight from the Italian-Slovenian border, where UNHCR is addressing the refugee crisis in connection with the war in Ukraine. «What you are about to do» she told the students, «is the essence of what happens every single day at the College: becoming an expert at international understanding. Of all the many different things I learned at the College, stepping into the shoes of someone completely different than me is the most important.»

MUN is a student-driven CAS activity at the College, supervised by the Deputy Head Academic Joanne Jean de Koning
