GeoAdriatico

UWC Adriatic has hosted a panel about peace during the international conference organised by Cinzia Vitale ONLUS in partnership with the University of Trieste

International cooperation, climate change, the Blue economy, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Western Mediterranean Forum are among the topics discussed during GeoAdriatico, the international symposium held on 16-19 June in Trieste.

Promoted by Vitale Onlus in partnership with the University of Trieste, the event also explored topics in connection with economic investments and international finance, transport and port infrastructure, the maritime industry, environmental diplomacy and peacekeeping.

With reference to wars, migration and multi-religious efforts for peace the Dean of the University of Trieste, Professor Di Lenarda commented

“
The adverse events that have characterised these years, such as the still ongoing pandemic and Russian-Ukrainian conflict are affecting the international agenda and redefining global priorities. As ever in times of crisis, efforts must be made to support dialogue between all social components and to encourage a dialogue between scientists, academics, public policy analysts, diplomats and cooperators
”

On the third day of the event, the panel ‘International Conflicts and Migration, Multifaiths in Support of Peace’ was held at the UWC Adriatic. As part of the panel discussion, Maria Chiara Billi from the College emphasised that

“
education is the foremost peacebuilding element: education and knowledge must be based on empathy and knowledge about diversity
”

Geoadriatico was sponsored by the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. «The multi-ethnic and multi-faith identity of Trieste, built through centuries of peaceful coexistence between different cultures and religions,” noted Roberto Vitale, President of Vitale Onlus,

“
is meant to be an example of integration and international dialogue that sets a significant example for the rest of the world and Geoadriatico can play a significant role in enhancing this. Bringing dialogue back to the centre of political, economic and cultural choices is one of GeoAdriatico’s priorities
”

Guests from 21 nations  attended the event, among which Fabio Cassese, Director General for Development Cooperation at the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs; Filippo Giorgi, the ICTP climatologist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate; Dario Giacomin, Deputy Secretary General of Defence; Arben Ahmetaj, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania; Zeno D’Agostino, President of the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port System Authority; and Stefano Polli, Deputy Director of ANSA.
