«This is my ode to our world, to our rivers, to our mountains, to our oceans, to our seas,
That your beauty that is humbled and sustainable.
And now it’s my turn to pass you a favour.
To not tell my children of the tales
But to make sure they are around to see the beauty that you hold».
Taking UWC Adriatic students to the mountains means a lot of things. On their return from the trip to the Avostanis peak, some of them shared their impressions.
«In the whole first part of the hike we were walking in fog» said Anna from Norway, «but when we reached the peak an impeccable alpine landscape revealed itself as the sky cleared up and sun came out!».
«Climbing to the Avostanis summit was one of the boldest things I have ever done,» said Yousuf from Iraq. «Once I got to the top I had mixed feelings. I couldn’t hold back the tears because of all the pure air I was breathing. I felt lucky to be up there, in the midst of all that purity. Many people will live their entire lives without getting the chance to have such an experience…».
Daniela from Costa Rica also enjoyed connecting with nature from a scientific point of view. «Dr Ana Černok, a mineralist and a geologist, taught us a lot about the Carnic Alps and the geology of this mountain».
Some students felt challenged and ultimately satisfied, others approached the experience by focusing on physical exertion while others drew inspiration for writing and filming their “Ode to the Mountain”: the words you can hear in the beautiful video made by Max from Canada, a second-year student who is a passionate videomaker.
