On the anniversary of his sad passing, we are delighted to announce the creation of a new scholarship honouring the memory of UWC Adriatic’s longstanding Mathematics Teacher and Professor Emeritus, Elham Sheiry.
Born in Egypt in 1938, Elham Sheiry studied mathematics in Cairo and Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK) before arriving in Duino one year after the opening of the College. Mr Sheiry taught mathematics from 1984 until his retirement in 2004, after which he remained a pillar in the UWC community, culminating in his appointment as Professor Emeritus in 2009. He is fondly remembered for his ability to inspire passion in his subject, his astonishing memory, his gifts of chocolates, and left a lasting impression on students, colleagues and the local community. You can read more about Mr Sheiry’s life here, as remembered by his former student and colleague Maria Canfora.
Starting next academic year, the biennial Elham Sheiry Scholarship, generously provided by an anonymous donor, will ensure that Mr Sheiry’s legacy as an educator will continue for a whole new generation.
Thanks to your support, over 80% of all students at UWC Adriatic receive scholarships, ensuring that our community is open to all. With your help, we can continue to offer scholarships to more and more students, as we use education to unite the world.
