College students win multiple prizes at GimBMUN 2023

Five of our students spend 3 days in Lubljana with Slovenian and international peers

From Friday, 20 January to Sunday, 22 January five UWC Adriatic students were invited to Ljubljana to take part in the Gimnazija Bežigrad Model United Nations Conference (GimBMUN 2023). First-year students Pearl (Malta), Sofia (South Africa) and Tim (Finland), joined the more experienced second-years Mihailo (Serbia) and Weronika (Poland) for a full three days of Model United Nations debates on international issues dealing with the ongoing energy crisis.

“
We participated in four out of five UN committees. he Security Council (Weronika), the Human Rights Council (Sofia), the Counter-Terrorism Committee (Mihailo), and the United Nations Environment Programme (Tim and Pearl).
”

Explained Pearl.

Mihailo found the discussions to be very engaging:

“
All delegates had done a lot of research work on the topics we debated and were very knowledgeable. The part I found most challenging was representing the Russian Federation because I had to put my own convictions on the side and persuade the other delegates to vote for my position in the resolution.
”

He and the other Adriatic students must have been very convincing indeed, since each one received a Best Delegate prize in every council they participated in, and collectively they also won an additional prize as Best Delegation.

“
I was terribly nervous before we started because I had never been in an MUN conference before», recalls Sofia. «However, as the hours passed I felt the tension fade and my self-confidence grow. I decided to focus on what I could learn from this experience, instead of dwelling on what I did not know. In doing so I learned that by just putting yourself out there and trying something new you can actually open yourself to opportunities and grow so much as a person in such a short time
