On Tuesday 14 February the UWC Adriatic Rettore − Dr. Khalid El-Metaal − and a group of students from countries like Afghanistan, Bosnia Herzegovina, Cambodia, Ukraine and Zambia welcomed back to the College Mr. Aldo Pianciamore and Madam Etta Carignani for the Acts of Kindness Awards ceremony of the Hazel Marie Cole association.
At our College, even those who have never met her in person know that Hazel Marie Cole was a local friend of the College who cared a lot about our students. Whenever she noticed they needed something she would go out of her way to be helpful − for instance by providing warm clothes to students ill-equipped for Duino’s winter season.
The Hazel Marie Cole Acts of Goodness Award – established by her family, friends and, in particular by Hazel’s widower, Mr. Aldo Pianciamore – ensures that Hazel’s kindness lives on both in our community and beyond. Alongside prizes awarded to people who do good deeds, the association also supports UWC Adriatic students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. It therefore contributes to the socioeconomic diversity of our student body.
Eighteen students were involved in this year’s ceremony: both first- and second-year students from Bosnia Herzegovina, Cambodia, Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kosovo, Iran, Lebanon, Montenegro, South Sudan, Ukraine, Tanzania, Tunisia, Venezuela and Zambia.
commented Mr. Pianciamore.
College students receive this prize in the form of a much-appreciated pocket money contribution thanks to which they are able to afford everyday expenses that are not covered by their scholarships.
says the Rettore.
