Talk by Domenico Chirico (UWCAD 1990-92)

The importance of grassroots initiatives in a talk by our alumnus Domenico Chirico

On Wednesday, 15 March alumnus Domenico Chirico (UWCAD 1990-92) visited the College and met the entire College community for the second “Orizzonti” talk in the spring term.

Domenico has spent many years working and volunteering with grassroots NGOs in Syria and Irak, supporting communities in times of conflict. He now works for the Fondazione Charlemagne in Rome, identifying and funding local initiatives that do transformative work that have little access to public funds. He described several inspiring projects the foundation is currently supporting in Rome, often described as a “do it yourself city” where a resilient population is finding solutions to compensate for the demise of the welfare state and the inefficiencies of public sector.

Domenico shared his considerable experience in this domain and discussed with students why grassroots initiatives have an important role to play in building a more just and peaceful world.
