Councillor Giorgio Rossi at the College

The Councillor for Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Trieste has visited our College

Councillor Giorgio Rossi visited our College yesterday to meet the Rettore, Dr. Khalid El-Metaal and the College community.

After introductions in the staff room, where teachers and non-teaching staff were having their coffee break, our Rettore took Councillor Rossi on a very comprehensive tour of our open campus, including the library, the science and art laboratories, classrooms, music school and residences. Councillor Rossi was able to see the students and teachers as they went about their daily activities, noticing the College’s innovative educational methods and the engagement of the student body.

Councillor Rossi stayed on for lunch with a group of students from Portugal, the USA, Italy and Zambia, who shared their enthusiasm for UWC. Mr Rossi recommended that they make the most of the great opportunity of a scholarship to come to Duino.

“
Here you have the chance to really build a world that is united, even in its diversity. Seeing how committed you are to affecting change in the world, I am sure that you will be up to the task. And not only in Duino, but also, tomorrow, when you return home
”

he said.

“
The reality of our times is very complex
”

he went on to say,

“
but I am optimistic and believe in the possibility of a better future. Getting to know this important international institution, which has been present in our territory for over 40 years, gives substance to this hope. As you demonstrate every day in this hub of humanity, it is indeed possible, beyond the differences that drive people apart, to work together to bring about positive change in the world.
”

Dr. El-Metaal concluded the meeting stating he feels

“
honoured and extremely pleased with the visit of Councillor Rossi, with whom we hope to initiate collaborations aimed at making the cultural heritage of Trieste even better known to our students. These are young people who are extremely curious and eager to deepen their knowledge of this wonderful area, which they will always remember after their two-year period in Duino, becoming ambassadors of Italian culture and that of Friuli Venezia Giulia in particular.
