UWC Adriatic Educational Experience

Reflections and insights from our Rettore, Dr. Khalid El-Metaal.

During the recent reunions celebrating the generations of UWC Adriatic from 40 and 30 years ago, our Rettore, Dr. Khalid El-Metaal delivered a presentation with his insights on our unique educational model and its future development.

Over the past 41 years, the college has aimed to equip students not just with academic knowledge but with the skills and mindset to effect change in a world that is increasingly confronted by significant challenges and complexity.

All United World Colleges deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, a curriculum that provides students with a globally recognized pre-university qualification. However, the IB Diploma at UWC Adriatic represents only the “tip of the iceberg” in the holistic educational experience that we offer.

Defining “UWCness”: Beyond the Classroom

Our educational endeavour is to find a balance between form and freedom, allowing students to engage in substantial learning both inside and outside the classroom. To achieve this, we define “UWCness,” which encapsulates the unique and transformative experience shared by all students at UWC Adriatic. While each student’s journey is unique, they all share a common narrative defined by a series of intangibles and tangibles.

Intangibles:

  • Providing Opportunities and Spaces: we offer environments where students can explore their potential and pursue their passions.
  • Informal and Non-formal Learning: we encourage learning through experiences outside traditional classroom and in community settings.
  • Belief and Trust: we believe in the students’ ability to effect change before they complete their UWC or higher education and trust them to take initiative and be responsible while continuing to provide guidance and support whenever necessary so that all students may benefit.

Tangibles:

The educational experience offered at UWC Adriatic is aimed at developing the following skills:

  • Learning to Serve: our students engage in activities that serve others to develop skills in communication, identifying needs, project design, resource management, impact evaluation, and reflecting on outcomes.
  • Learning to Be: our students develop social and emotional intelligence through reflective practices, collaborative projects, and conflict resolution exercises, supported by a nurturing environment.
  • Learning to Know: our students acquire skills in interpretation and analysis, investigation and research, synthesis and production (oral and written), evaluation, critical thinking, and international-mindedness through a balanced approach that extends beyond academic excellence.
  • Learning to Act: our students are offered the tools to create impactful actions that benefit local and global communities, while learning to create effective and meaningful contributions.

Affirming Diversity: Bridging the Equity Gap

UWC Adriatic does more than just “celebrate” the diversity of its community; it aims to affirm diversity by closing the equity gap. This means ensuring that students from varied backgrounds have equal opportunities to learn and succeed.

  • Creating Multiple Pathways of Learning: we offer diverse learning opportunities to different needs and backgrounds.
  • Reframing Excellence: we recognize that excellence is a moving target, not solely based on academic performance.
  • Scaffolding for Greater Equity: we provide the necessary tools and support to help all students achieve their full potential.
  • Reimagining Post-UWC Adriatic Options: we encourage our students to explore pathways beyond traditional university routes, including projects and career-based options.

Extending UWC Adriatic’s Impact

In our pursuit to uphold the UWC mission, we focus on several key initiatives to expand our educational offers:

  • Educating at the Margins: following in the footsteps of the first Rettore, David B. Sutcliffe, we collaborate with projects like Young Aurora, Still I Rise and Go Make a Difference to explore humanitarian educational initiatives.
  • Building Networks: we partner with Italian schools to foster mutual understanding and collaboration in educational practices.
  • Leveraging the Power of Technology: we equip our students with the knowledge and tools to use technologies wisely and ethically.
  • Learning Through Short Courses: inspired by UWC Atlantic’s short course for adults, UWC Adriatic plans to launch the first short course for alumni, promoting continuous engagement in the UWC mission.
