A person wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates cap and glasses stands in a dimly lit, arched walkway holding up a sign that says "Princeton 2028." The person is smiling and dressed in a brown t-shirt. The background features ornate stone architecture and a glowing light fixture.

Valerio Castellini: from an Italian high school to Princeton University

Valerio Castellini’s journey from Classical studies in Perugia to Princeton University, via UWC Maastricht

The only Italian student admitted this year to Princeton University  —with a substantial scholarship— is Valerio Castellini, a young student from Perugia who has just completed his final two years of high school at UWC Maastricht. This news has been picked up by a large number of Italian national and regional media outlets, given the great prestige of this university, which brings to mind names of renowned figures such as Albert Einstein, Alan Turing, John Nash, John F. Kennedy, Michelle Obama, and Jeff Bezos.

“
I am thrilled about this extraordinary opportunity, which I might never have had if it weren’t for my UWC experience
”

says Valerio.

“
This is why I urge Italian students not to miss the call for applications, which is issued every year by UWC Italia, offering a few dozen young people the unique chance to live and study in an international environment.
”

Up to three years ago, when he participated in the UWC Italia selections and won a scholarship from the Agnelli Foundation to attend UWC Maastricht in the Netherlands, Valerio thought he would finish his classical studies at a high school in Perugia, perhaps after going on an international exchange programme for one year. Then came the discovery of the UWC movement and the UWC Italia call for applications—an irresistible opportunity to experience not just one, but many different cultures at the same time. The extraordinary diversity offered by the 18 UWC schools and colleges is unparalleled: the student body consists of nearly 200 students from over 80 countries united by their commitment to the UWC values of making education a force to unite people nations and cultures, for peace and a sustainable future.

“
Many people think that UWC is like any other international school
”

Valerio continues,

“
but it is much more than that—it is a life-changing experience, the benefits of which extend far beyond mere academic results. To seize this opportunity, Italian applicants for the 2025-25 academic year must apply by October 31, 2024.
