Celebrating 25 Years of Generosity: a tribute to the power of community

UWC Adriatic recently honoured Mr. Aldo Pianciamore, a longstanding friend of the College, for twenty-five years of unwavering support for our students. A Duinese local, Mr. Pianciamore has generously donated pocket money to generations of College students — a contribution that has made a profound difference in their lives.

The celebration, held in the College Auditorium, brought together Mr. Pianciamore, his daughter Donatella Pianciamore — a UWC Adriatic alumna — our Rettore, Dr. Khalid El-Metaal, Secretary General Valentina Bach, and students who have benefited from his generosity. A heartfelt surprise came in the form of a remote greeting from Elizabeth Sutcliffe, wife of the College’s founding Rettore, David Sutcliffe.

Our Rettore shared the touching story of how Mr. Pianciamore’s late wife, Hazel, inspired this enduring legacy of kindness. Hazel Marie Cole, an aerodynamics engineer who moved to Duino with Aldo, transitioned into teaching and became a beloved figure in the local community. She was also a talented sculptor, a staunch advocate for young artists, and a compassionate supporter of College students and others in need. After Hazel’s passing, Mr. Pianciamore committed himself to continuing her legacy of compassion through the establishment of the Premio alla Bontà, celebrating acts of kindness, as well as through his steadfast support of UWC Adriatic students.

During the event, students presented Mr. Pianciamore with handwritten thank-you cards expressing their gratitude for his belief in their potential. He also received a special memento: the College’s silver 500-lire coin, presented by Valentina Bach—a token of the College’s deep appreciation for his long standing generosity.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Pianciamore for his remarkable contributions, which exemplify the strength of the ties between UWC Adriatic and the local community. His enduring support continues to inspire our students to honour his generosity by making the most of their UWC experience and having a positive impact on the world.
