Students Win Video Contest by Fondazione Italiana Fegato

A team of three second-year students from UWC Adriatic – Rawane (from Morocco), Quynh Nga (from Vietnam) and Narel (from Spain) – under the guidance of Biology teacher Miloš Busarčević, has been awarded first place in the science communication competition Your Liver Your Voice, organised by the Fondazione Italiana Fegato.

Their video, Checkmate: The Silent Strategist Within, explored the theme “Alcohol and the Liver: Myths and Facts” by drawing an imaginative parallel between the game of chess and liver function. Through this metaphor, the students highlighted how the effects of alcohol on the liver often unfold quietly over time, with decisions carrying consequences that may become irreversible.

The jury praised the originality, emotional depth, and bold narrative style of the project, noting how it succeeded in raising awareness and encouraging reflection on liver health. The panel also offered constructive feedback on areas such as pacing and visual variation — turning the experience into an excellent learning-by-doing opportunity in science dissemination and creativity.

For Rawane, the project also held deep personal meaning:

“
Growing up, I saw a close relative struggle with liver failure, and it always felt like something too heavy for people my age to talk about. So being able to turn that silence into a project, and then having real liver researchers and oncologists recognise it, honestly feels surreal. Winning just makes me feel proud that our message came through.
”

Narel reflected on the power of teamwork and creativity throughout the process:

“
What made this project so rewarding was the atmosphere we created as a team—we felt at ease sharing ideas, and that really fuelled our creativity,” she said. “I loved how Your Liver Your Voice gave us the freedom to be both scientific and artistic in how we approached the topic.”
“I’m not a biology student, so I learned a lot through this process,” she added. “Even with limited resources, we found solutions—borrowing a phone with a good camera and working hard to make the video visually presentable. It was a true team effort.
”

The video was presented at the Fondazione Italiana Fegato Alumni Day on 26 June and has been shared on the Foundation’s online channels.
