At UWC Adriatic, sustainability is a core principle that encompasses environmental, economic, and ethical dimensions within our College community.
The UWC educational model is designed to empower students to become changemakers, equipped with the skills necessary to tackle the pressing issues of the 21st century. Understanding and addressing the climate crisis is essential to this mission. Therefore, UWC Adriatic is actively raising awareness about climate change through its educational programs. Additionally, the College is committed to enhancing its environmental, financial, and social sustainability.
Environmental sustainability is deeply ingrained in campus life at UWC Adriatic. Led by the Student Sustainability Council (SUSCO), students initiate impactful projects and events fostering awareness and education throughout the year. By engaging in global activism, students advocate for climate action, regularly hosting events and promoting sustainable living to reduce carbon footprints. In 2021, UWC Adriatic began to establish a reporting system in order to calculate the College’s Carbon Footprint.
By considering social sustainability, UWC Adriatic advances the UWC mission of ‘uniting people.’ The College is committed to maintaining and strengthening its relationships with the wider community and various organisations. From daily interactions with local residents in Duino to annual workshops with schools in the region, UWC Adriatic is proud to engage with the local community, allowing UWC values to be heard and witnessed by a broader audience.
UWC Adriatic’s economic sustainability is bolstered by diverse support networks, including contributions from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UWC International Donors, corporate partners, and individual benefactors. In 2023, The College established the UWC Adriatic Endowment Fund through the The Stock Weinberg – Edward Sutcliffe Foundation. The Endowment Fund operates on the principle of perpetual investment, ensuring that donations are not immediately spent but are strategically utilised over time to provide scholarships for generations to come.
