What is the UWC Adriatic Endowment Fund?

The UWC Adriatic Endowment Fund was launched in 2023 as part of the College’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

It was established to safeguard UWC Adriatic’s distinctive scholarship model and student diversity for the long term. The Fund is built to ensure that scholarships remain available to students who need them not only today but for generations to come.

Scholarships are fundamental to the character of UWC Adriatic. They make it possible for students from many different countries, cultures and financial circumstances – including refugees and those from countries in conflict – to live and learn together in Duino.

Why Endow Scholarships?

Traditional scholarship gifts meet the cost of a student’s education today. Their impact is immediate and powerful, and they remain essential to the College.

An endowed gift works differently. It is invested so that it can generate annual distributions for scholarships, while preserving the underlying capital for the future.

In this way, a gift to the Endowment can support students not only today, but year after year, creating a lasting legacy for generations of UWC Adriatic students.

How does the Endowment work?

1. Your gift

By making a gift to the UWC Adriatic Endowment Fund – either to the UK-based charity Bridge to the Future or to the Italy-based UWC Stock Weinberg Edward Sutcliffe Foundation ETS – you are supporting perpetual scholarships at UWC Adriatic.

2. Invest for the long term

The assets are invested under the governance and investment arrangements of the the charity receiving the gift.

3. Support scholarships year after year

Regular distributions from the charities provide annual ‘perpetual’ scholarships for students at UWC Adriatic.

The Endowment Goals & Progress

The first goal of the UWC Adriatic Endowment Fund has now been exceeded.

Thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents and friends, and in particular to two extraordinary matching schemes made possible by Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo, the total value of the Endowment in August 2026 stands at over €6.5 million – subject to currency fluctuations.

The long term goal of the UWC Adriatic Endowment Fund is bold – to raise the funds necessary to provide 50% of students at the College with scholarships, requiring an estimated €50 million in invested assets.

Pioneer Generations Endowment Scholarship

In July 2024, the College hosted its first 40-year reunion with alumni from the first three generations (82-84, 83-85 and 84-86), who gathered once again in Duino. On the occasion of the reunion, some former students of these ‘Pioneer Generations’ decided to do something extraordinary: raise funds for a perpetual scholarship – the ‘Pioneer Generations Endowment Scholarship’ – which will offer a scholarship to attend UWC Adriatic not only in the following academic year, but for every year to come.

This shared project is a true testament to the UWC experience, as former students work together to help others. Every member of the generation is invited to participate, and every single donation is a valuable contribution to the collective gift. Fundraising for the scholarship will last three years, with the aim of awarding the first Pioneer Generations scholarship to a student from the class of 2027-28.
