World Arts and Cultures Teaching Position Vacant
(Part-Time maternity cover from August 19th until December 20th 2019)

UWC Adriatic is one of the 16 UWC schools and colleges across the world. The college shares the UWC Movement Mission to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
UWC Adriatic is set in the picturesque village of Duino, near Trieste in north-eastern Italy. It offers a challenging holistic, residential educational programme including the two-year IB Diploma (taught in English) to around 185 students from 80 countries. The college mission is to welcome young people at the threshold of adult independence and guides them on the way to being compassionate and conscientious individuals with the energy and understanding to work for positive change. Experiences gained within a diverse multicultural community in an Italian region at the crossroads of cultural, political, historical and geographical transitions are used to stimulate personal reflection and growth.

UWC Adriatic broadens the horizons of young people by welcoming them into a diverse multicultural community which develops their interpersonal skills of empathy and compassion. The college capitalizes on its village setting at a historical, political, cultural and geographical crossroads in the heart of Europe. Interwoven through the surrounding community, UWC Adriatic draws inspiration from Italian and local culture, music, art, architecture, history and linguistic diversity to stimulate personal reflection and creativity of students. Outdoor activities in adjacent hills, mountains, rivers and sea provide a breadth of physical challenges. Throughout their time at the college all students are committed to service to the community around them. UWC Adriatic offers students opportunities to fulfill their potential and develop the skills to become agents of positive change in an increasingly interconnected world.
Teachers at UWC Adriatic need to be open-minded and willing and able to be enthusiastic participants in the life of the college. Students need to be guided through a challenging and exciting educational experience as a transition into adult life and learning. Teachers provide, or better still facilitate, student-centred experiential learning opportunities which are carefully, but discreetly, monitored and guided in more suitable directions as required. The overall experience is one that should give students the opportunity to develop the self-confidence and moral values required to be selfless leaders of the future. This is not the same as just teaching IB classes to highly academic students each looking for the best IB score that they can get – it is much more professionally demanding and rewarding!

A part-time teacher (67% of a full-time working load) is required to cover for the IB Diploma World Arts and Cultures course from August 19th until December 20th 2019, as part-time maternity cover.
IB World Arts and Cultures is a unique course pioneered at UWC Adriatic, which draws on materials from many cultures to study works of art and other cultural phenomena in order both to appreciate them in their own right and to understand them as manifestations of wider cultural and social life. Students are encouraged to observe, analyse and consider cultural differences and similarities and to understand the role of cultural artefacts in shaping and reflecting aspects of cultural identity. In the first year, students undertake a comparative analysis of a selected list of world cultures, including Benin Africa, Ottoman Turkey and Tokugawa Japan. In the second year, attention is focused on the cultural heritage of Italy and the region adjacent to her North-eastern frontiers. World Arts and Cultures is offered at Standard Level only.

The appointed teacher will need to teach two first year and two second year classes. A teacher with the ability to teach lively, intelligent students in an engaging, experiential, and stimulating approach is required. Experience of teaching cultural analysis based on art work, the ability to speak and write in English, and a supportive understanding of the distinct educational model of the UWC movement and UWC Adriatic college are essential. Knowledge of the IB Diploma Programme is very important as the second year students will be working on assignments (in English) which will contribute to their final diploma score. The college runs an 8 day cycle of lessons over 5 teaching days per week. The candidate will be teaching 2 classes in each of the 2 academic years of the college. This will amount to an average of around 12 hours of teaching per week, but not on the same days each week.
UWC Adriatic provides much more than a classroom experience. Candidates living in or close to Duino and who are willing to have some involvement in student life outside of the teaching hours will have a strong advantage. A suitably qualified graduate teaching intern could be considered for this post. In this case they could be made up to full time with residential life and extra-curricular contributions.

Salary will be dependent on previous teaching experience. For this appointment only EU/EEA/Swiss nationals or nationals of other countries in possession of a valid Italian work permit will be accepted. Possession of an EU driving license and the readiness to drive 9-seater MPVs could be advantage for candidates who wish to offer greater engagement in the college programme. The nature of any possible additional activities and services will be discussed at interview with candidates who progress to this stage.

Candidates should send a CV, a supporting letter of application, photocopy of passport or identity document and the names and contact information for four professional referees to this email by March 26th 2019.

As all UWCs including UWC Adriatic take safeguarding seriously, the college will require evidence that candidates have no history of unsuitability for working with young people in the age range 16-19 years.
