What does the future of healthcare look like? For UWC Adriatic first-year students, the answer became a little clearer thanks to an engaging session with Marco Gorini, Project Head of Digital Health and Innovation at AstraZeneca.
Gorini’s talk provided students with an inside look at the pharmaceutical sector, with a particular focus on the fast-evolving world of digital health. From AI-powered drug discovery to patient-empowering digital tools, he outlined the many ways in which technology is transforming healthcare—and the wide range of career opportunities opening up as a result.
Artificial intelligence, Gorini explained, is playing a key role in accelerating drug development, designing and analysing clinical trials, optimising manufacturing processes, and supporting business activities across HR, sales and marketing. Ultimately, these innovations are driving greater efficiency, productivity, and impact across the sector.
He also touched on AstraZeneca’s ambitious sustainability goals: the company is on track to become carbon neutral by 2026 and carbon negative by 2030.
For many in the audience, the session was eye-opening.

The event was part of UWC Adriatic’s ongoing efforts to expose students to a wide range of global challenges and professional sectors, helping them explore meaningful future pathways rooted in innovation and impact. Indeed, since the start of the academic year, our first-year students have been involved in the UWC Impact programme, designed to develop social entrepreneurship skills. In parallel, the College and AstraZeneca have been working together on “Building a Healthy Ecosystem”, an initiative aimed at promoting preventative health measures and fostering a supportive environment focused on both mental and physical well-being. This initiative is part of the Young Health Programme, AstraZeneca’s global effort to improve youth health worldwide.
